Putting our admiration aside—walruses’ distinctive features help them survive and thrive in their Arctic habitat. Their 4-inch-thick blubber keeps them toasty in the frigid Arctic waters and their whiskers help them feel along the ocean floor for food.

Walruses are truly unlike any other ocean animal. But walruses—and many other Arctic animals—are at risk. These incredible animals are threatened by melting sea ice and pollution, which could lead to declines in their population.
