We’re Celebrating World Habitat Day with the
First 11 Families “Staking Their Claims” in
A Rick Case Habitat Community

FORT LAUDERDALE (October 1, 2018) – Habitat for Humanity of Broward celebrates World Habitat Day as 11 Families Stake Their Claim to lots in A Rick Case Habitat Community.

On this special occasion, 11 families in Habitat’s Homeownership program have staked their claim to the first lots in Habitat Broward’s newest community, A Rick Case Habitat Community. Seventy-seven homes will ultimately be built in A Rick Case Habitat Community, making it the largest development in Habitat Broward’s history. It will also feature a community park.

To celebrate the assignment of homes, homeowners were invited to place stakes on their newly formed house pads, in celebration of World Habitat Day 2018.

Present to witness this accomplishment were Nancy Robin (CEO), Marcia Barry-Smith (Director of Community Outreach and Program Services), Robert Taylor, Jr. (Board Chair) and other Board members.

“I watched a future homeowner reach down and fill her hands with a fistful of earth from what will become her family’s homestead, and I was touched to my core. This is so much more than building a house. It is the reason we do what we do,” offered Marcia Barry-Smith, Habitat Broward Director of Community Outreach and Program Services.

More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step to promote the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.

On World Habitat Day, Habitat for Humanity joins the United Nations and organizations around the world to raise awareness, educate, and mobilize individuals and communities to take action on the global housing crisis. Over 150 governments have agreed to the New Urban Agenda, a global framework highlighting the need for urban policies to emphasize housing, secure tenure to prevent arbitrary rent increases and eviction; and encourage community-led development.

Habitat Broward echoes the values of Habitat for Humanity International and affirms that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.

“Seeing our homeowners atop the pads that will become the foundations for their new homes reminds us all of our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, said Nancy Robin, Habitat Broward CEO & Executive Director. “Here in South Florida, we are working hard with our partners to make that happen.”

Meet Cameron and Victoria: New Core Volunteers

How does someone become a Core Volunteer?

Just ask Cameron and Victoria, two of our newest Core members. Cam and Victoria were infected with Habititis during a Team Build day sponsored by Cam’s employer Broadspire. Now almost a year later, it is a rare Saturday when one or both of them are not on the construction site working alongside other volunteers to build homes for families in need.

“We love volunteering for Habitat! Nothing is more humbling than to work alongside the future homeowners as we build their future,” states Victoria. “Cam and I are blessed to be part of an amazing group of people we now lovingly call our Habitat family. We can’t imagine spending our Saturday mornings any other way.”

Thank you Cameron and Victoria for your continued dedication to our mission and for always serving with a smile in your heart. On behalf of everyone at Habitat Broward we want to wish you a big congratulations on your upcoming October wedding!
